Wisdom in the Wilderness

A Seasonal Journey through the Wild of Nature and Spirit.

The Winter Invitation

Led by our Brother Stefan, the Wisdom in the Wilderness program is an introductory course to monastic living in nature. Running from January through March, this seasonal immersion invites you to step out into the crisp winter air to explore the wilderness of the self and spirit.

While the world sleeps in winter, we wake to the "still, small voice" found in the rustle of the leaves and the flow of the creek.

The Morning Trek

Tuesdays & Thursdays | Starting at 9:30 AM

The journey begins after morning prayer and breakfast. We meet at the threshold of the forest to begin our meditative trek through the 260 acres of the Community of Peace.

  • The Walk: For approximately one hour, we explore the winding paths, hidden creeks, and high ridges of the sanctuary.

  • The Dialogue: As we walk, Brother Stefan leads the group in discussions of poetry, prose, scripture, and personal insight. It is a time for guidance, exploration, and questioning—learning to appreciate not just the beautiful wilderness of this world, but the wilderness within us.

  • Walking with Wisdom: We integrate the teachings of Jesus and ancient spiritual wisdom into our movement, seeing the land as a living gospel.

Creative Integration & Sacred Sharing

The walk is only the beginning. The insights gathered in the forest are brought back to the hearth.

Following our morning trek, participants are given Soul Exercises and Creative Practices. These may include:

  • Writing & Poetry Assignments: Prompts designed to help you articulate the "inner depths" you discovered on the trail.

  • Reflective Study: Deepening the connection to the prose or scripture discussed during the walk.

  • Sacred Sharing: While purely voluntary, participants are invited to share their writings, poems, or insights during our Evening Prayer services. This allows your personal journey to become a gift of wisdom for the entire community.

  • Prospective Members: Those curious about the monastic rhythm of life.
