Spring Peeper

Spring Peepers are native to Virginia. They are typically 1 ¼” and live for 3 years. They are a species of chorus frogs, but have sticky hands and feet and can climb like tree frogs - even on windows.

In the winter they produce antifreeze in their blood and their heart stops beating altogether until it warms up again.

The males gather to call around any marshy patch of water, from ditches to farm ponds to swamps. They will call sitting on the ground or from climbing a foot or two up stems and twigs up to 50’ away from the water.
